afghan welcome
Since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, more than 21,000 Afghan refugees have been resettled in the UK under several schemes designed to support those at-risk.
There is a huge effort by the public authorities to ensure those settling in North London receive the best start and ongoing support in their new lives.
The OpCourage Warm Welcome Afghan Service, provided by Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, ensures the mental health needs of these individuals are met in a holistic single point of access service.
In partnership with OpCourage Veteran’s Services across England, the Warm Welcome Service now provides assessment, support and advocacy for Afghan individuals. The service, officially launched on Monday 17 October, will also support people to find help for wider needs, such as housing, financial and social needs through connections with local councils, government departments and charities.

Dr Vincent Kirchner, C&I Chief Medical Officer, said: “Improving the quality of our community facilities is a crucial part of our plans to help people with mental health problems to live well in their communities. The redevelopment of Lowther Road is an exciting opportunity.
"It will create a modern, welcoming space that will allow us to offer integrated services that address both mental health and physical health. Importantly it will also provide an enhanced working environment for our clinical teams.”

HIRE BIKES TO BEAT TUBE STRIKE
With tube line cancelled and roads jammed due to strike action, there's yet another argument to travel around London on two wheels. And if you don't have a bike of your own, the TfL Santander Cycle Hire scheme could be your key to the capital.
Everyone's used to seeing the cycle docking stations throughout central London, but there are some useful locations further north in Camden and Islington.
These include a docking station tucked away on Castlehaven Road, off Chalk Farm Road and York Way to the north of Kings Cross. In Islington, there's a docking station just off Upper Street at Islington Green. Check the link above for the full map.

Staff from the Camden & Islington NHS Trust are now playing a role in training Met officers in the use of Taser.

Abu Idris, violence reduction specialist & reducing restrictive practice lead explains: “The Trust has a long-standing relationship with the Met working with their Mental Health Liaison Police Team as part of a wider approach to addressing incidents involving abuse and assaults. NEW HIGHGATE HOSPITAL: construction under way
A new 78-bed mental health hospital in Highgate is schedule to open in 2023, and construction is under way at the site just to the west of the Whittington Hospital off Dartmouth Park Hill.
The Camden & Islington NHS Trust admits some 2,500 mental health patients annually, so the new hospital, expected to cost some £70m, is much-needed.
The Trust has produced this video about the new facility. (Image: Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust.)
#IWD policing challenge
Officers from the Met's Central North command were outside HIghbury & Islington tube station on 7 March to speak with local people as part of their International Women's Day work.
The Met are also promoting a 'Walk and Talk' initiative, where women with concerns about safety and how London is policed can meet their local officers for an honest discussion.

highgate ROBBERs MAKE TUBE GETAWAY
Police want to trace these three men following an armed robbery in Archway Road on the evening of Saturday, 6 November.
At least two of the men were armed with crowbars. They threatened the shopkeeper and assaulted him before stealing items including cash and cigarettes. They then ran from the shop and, unusually, boarded a tube at Highgate Underground Station to make their getaway.
The criminals are clearly quite brazen but not a little stupid. They'll be caught surely given TfL technology? If you know who they are, please call the Met on 101.
70 barking trains daily
As a result of electrification work and the introduction of longer trains, the TFL operated line from Gospel Oak in Camden and Upper Holloway in Islington to Barking is now carrying record numbers of passengers.
Every day, 70 trains provide near 'Tube style' links to East London and connections with the upper reaches of the Victoria Line at Blackstock Road and the C2C or District Line at Barking.
It is hoped that increased use of the route will reduce the strain on Northern and Piccadilly Line services in Camden and Islington.
hospital wait worries
As the backlog of people waiting for hospital treatment continues to grow, figures show that the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead has the second longest waiting list in London.
Over 90,000 patients are awaiting treatment at the RFH, Across London the number of people on waiting lists is around 950,000.
The NHS has systems in place to prioritise care so, despite these worrying figures, Camden and Islington residents are still advised to contact family doctors as soon as medical need becomes apparent.
mystery over missing man
Police are releasing limited details about the disappearance of Frank McKeever from the N1 area of Islington. He was last seen back in August.
The Met's Specialist Crime detectives are investigating, which clearly indicates that the circumstances appear suspicious. Two people have been arrested but released under investigation as enquiries continue.
The Met want anyone with information about Frank McKeever to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
for art's sake...
Well this is going to divide opinion, and launch a few conspiracy theories too. What could it all mean?
Tottenham Court Road has gained 11 multi-coloured crossings as part of an art project. The grey tarmac has had a funky makeover in a campaign to encourage London tourism
London artist Yinka Ilori is behind the artwork which was part funded by Camden Council. The colourful crossings will remain in place for up to a year. We've got a little hunch that they're starting to fade just a shade already though...
CAMDEN AND ISLINGTON PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN WORDS
We speak to a community cop in the first part of our series profiling the people who keep us moving, keep us safe and keep us healthy in Camden and Islington.

Innocent was sentenced at the Old Bailey on 21 October.
The victim of the Islington attack in April 2020 was taken to hospital with four stab wounds to her head, neck and left shoulder. Fortunately she survived.
Detective Constable Russell Harvey said: "This was a series of premeditated, unprovoked attacks without any warning or motive. Innocent went out looking to cause harm to people in the community and his actions were nothing short of horrific. Following his arrest, he attempted at every stage to hinder our investigation, even when cross examined in the box.
"Thanks to a dedicated investigation by Central North CID officers, he was quickly identified and linked to further offences by CCTV, Oyster card and phone data. “

Alongside the full report there is a short summary which provides an easy to read overview of the Trust's activities. For anyone entirely unfamiliar with NHS provision, you'll note that mental health is central to the Trust's remit.
Let's face it, nobody is going to read the whole thing, but the 12 page PDF document can be found here.
camden scooter trial
Love them or hate them, the chances are it's the latter, TfL e-scooters are coming to Camden.
While it is illegal to ride private e-scooters on roads or pavements, the TfL trial now puts a fleet of over 3,000 e-scooters at the disposal of Londoners.
Objections include safety of riders and pedestrians and the shift of focus away from Camden's perfectly green and health-enhancing cycling policy to yet more powered vehicles.
camden hospitals in cancer test trial
A new test which could detect more than 50 types of cancer is to be trialled at both of Camden's major hospitals, the Royal Free in Hampstead and University College London Hospital on the Euston Road.
The SYMPLIFY study will investigate a new multi-cancer early detection test in the NHS, known as Galleri. It aims to demonstrate how the Galleri test could be used to increase cancer detection rates.
Thousands of patients will take the Galleri blood test, which can detect over 50 different types of cancers with a very low false positive rate of less than 1 percent.
NEW 24-HR MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS SERVICE AT ST PANCRAS HOSPITAL

All four will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 6 October.
northern line weekend disruption on bank branch
The Northern Line's eastern leg is getting kneecapped every weekend until at least May 2022, with no service south of Moorgate on the Bank branch.
Some trains will run from Camden Town, Euston, Kings Cross and Angel via Old Street to Moorgate where they terminate. But TfL have warned that even this shortened Moorgate service will be limited, and have promised more trains on the Charing Cross branch to compensate.
Call us cynical, but we're not sure just how great an increase they can provide nor how helpful this is to those heading south and east, notably via the Central and Jubilee Lines or for National Rail trains from London Bridge.
The weekend work is to improve connections at Bank and Monument stations, which, to be fair, have been a running joke (or a free 'steps and speed walking' gym workout alternative) for many a year.
For more details please visit the TFL site.
TWO VIOLENT INCIDENTS IN CAMDEN AT WEEKEND
A young man was stabbed in the early hours of Sunday 12 September in the Finchley Road area of Camden. Thankfully he was not seriously hurt, however police are urging any witnesses to get in touch.

That incident was in the north-west corner of Camden borough. The previous morning, some four miles away in the south-east of Camden, shots were fired at the Rosewood Hotel in High Holborn.
Nobody was injured and the Met's investigation has led to a man being charged with firearms offences. He is Andrew Cross, 38, of Station Way, Greenwich.
